On November 23, 2019, Red Willow Community Church had the privilege of hosting Pastor Bill Spangler and his beautiful wife, Gwen, as he shared with the couples present on the topic of conflict resolution.
Couples enjoyed fellowship time, a beautiful set-up resembling a boxing ring and all the decorations done up by Martha Valencia and her talented team, being served by Red Willow’s very own youth, great food and a powerful message.
Some of the “Rules for Boxing With Your Spouse” that Pastor Bill outlined are:
- The fight is not over until you both win! We are a team and we fight as a team, and not against each other. It is not always necessary to be right.
- Conflict is unmet Priorities, Expectations, Assumptions, Concerns, Hopes, Beliefs, Fears, Values, Needs.
- Listen well: Level 1- all about me, Level 2- all about you, Level 3 – all about impact (search for “in-to-me-see” = intimacy).
- Don’t make up stories and assumptions.
- Talk about improving your relationship and follow through! What three things could I do to improve our relationship?
- Daily affirmations: The thing I like best about you today is…!
- Stop boxing and do the right thing. In your disagreements always have respect for one another.
Our prayer is that couples in our church can continue to grow in their love and service to one another and strengthen their foundation as a team. With that strong foundation, they can be effective in their daily life and opportunities to minister and witness to others of God’s grace in their marriage and life. Until next time…that’s a wrap!
Make sure you keep an eye out for our next Couple’s Cafe event. You won’t want to miss it!
